With a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Alabama, Jay began his business career in 1979 in the tax division of a regional CPA practice domiciled in Birmingham, AL. After a year with the CPA firm, he returned to the University of Alabama where he earned his Masters in Business Administration. In 1981 he joined the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis, Tennessee specializing in construction lending. Four years later in 1985, he made the decision to leverage his lending and construction background to enter the insurance and contract surety business with a local Memphis insurance agency. In 1992, Jay teamed with fellow employee Rick Powell to form Madden & Powell, Inc. In 2001 the firm merged with the Carruthers-Harris, Inc. creating Harris Madden & Powell, Inc. Jay is married with three children and is a member of Independent Presbyterian Church. He has been active serving in various industry trade associations and community boards. He is currently a state director of the Associated General Contractors of America.
